Which table height is right? Calculating frame and tabletop thickness

· 2 min read

Dimensions of rectangular table legs 50 × 72 cm: 50 cm wide, 72 cm high, 7 cm deep

How high your table ends up depends on two things: the height of the frame and the thickness of your tabletop. Here you can see which frame heights we offer, how to calculate the finished height and what to look out for with the width.

The calculation: frame plus tabletop

The finished height is the height of the frame plus the thickness of the tabletop. An example with a 72 cm frame:

Frame Tabletop thickness Finished height
72 cm 2 cm 74 cm
72 cm 3 cm 75 cm
72 cm 4 cm 76 cm

These frame heights are available

Frame height Usual for Shapes
30–42 cm Coffee tables and benches U-shape 40 cm, A-shape 42 cm, V-shape 42 cm, X-shape 40 cm, rectangular frames 30 cm
70–72 cm Dining tables and desks A-shape 72 cm, X-shape 70 cm, rectangular frames 72 cm
80 cm Higher than the usual table height X-shape 80 cm
100 cm Standing and bar tables Rectangular frames 100 cm

The width: no wider than the tabletop

At its widest point, the frame must not be wider than your tabletop, otherwise the feet stick out. This means the short side of the tabletop, because the two frames sit across it.

With U-, A- and V-shapes, the frame has a different width at the top and bottom. In the size 30/45 × 40 cm, the first number is the width at the top under the tabletop and the second the width at the bottom on the floor: 30 cm at the top, 45 cm at the bottom, 40 cm high. The larger of the two numbers is what counts.

If the frame is centred, the tabletop overhangs on each side by half the difference. An 80 cm wide tabletop on 70 cm wide rectangular frames therefore overhangs by 5 cm on each side: (80 − 70) / 2 = 5.

Work it out for your tabletop

Choose the height and set the width of your tabletop. The table leg finder shows you all suitable frames with dimensions and overhang.

Which frame fits under your tabletop?

Three details, and for each shape you see the matching size, the overhang and the finished table height.

What is the table for?

This means the short side of the tabletop (marked dark). The two frames sit across it.

Dimensions from our product data. The overhang applies when the frame is centred, measured at the widest point of the frame. Table height = frame height + tabletop thickness. Prices per set of 2 incl. VAT.
