Solid wood table with X-shaped legs – from tree trunk to designer piece
· 4 min read

A handmade table is much more than a piece of furniture. It tells a story – a story of genuine craftsmanship, natural raw material and the perfect interplay of wood and metal. In this article we take you behind the scenes and show you how a rough tree slice becomes a high-quality solid wood table full of character, on a sturdy metal frame from Noggi.
The beginning: a piece of nature
It all starts with a solid tree trunk. In our case it is a characterful tree slice, irregularly shaped, with a striking grain and natural cracks. This piece of wood is not just raw material but the foundation of a unique piece of furniture. Every growth ring, every discolouration tells of the decades in which the tree grew.
The wood is still raw, unsanded and untreated, but its potential is already visible. What matters at this stage is proper drying, so that the wood doesn’t crack or warp later. Only with patience and experience can the basis for quality be laid here.
Sanding makes the difference
Once the wood has dried sufficiently, the work begins. With great care, the surface is sanded, unevenness removed and the natural shape of the wood brought out. The characteristic edge of the tree slice is deliberately kept, because it is exactly this contour that makes the table special.
In several sanding passes the surface becomes smooth and pleasant to the touch. The grain now stands out clearly and reveals its unique pattern. Small cracks or holes are either filled with epoxy resin or deliberately left as a design feature.
Finishing with oil
Probably the most emotional moment in the process: applying the wood oil. With the very first brushstroke, the character of the wood changes completely. The previously matt surface begins to glow, the grain becomes intense, and the wood suddenly looks alive.
The oil not only protects against dirt and moisture, it also brings out the natural beauty of the wood. Depending on the desired look, a clear, slightly tinted or even pigmented oil is used. Several coats create a durable, hard-wearing surface – without losing the natural feel.
The foundation: metal table legs
The right base is at least as important as the tabletop. For our table we used a modern cross frame made of powder-coated steel – produced at www.tischbein-metall.de. The X-shape not only looks striking, it also provides maximum stability.
The combination of natural wood and industrially made metal creates an exciting contrast that really comes into its own in modern living spaces. At the same time, the focus stays on the solid wood – the frame carries and supports without taking over.
Our metal frames are made in the EU from quality steel, welded and powder-coated. They come in five shapes and two colours.
Assembly
Once the tabletop has been oiled and the metal frame is ready, the final step follows: assembly. Pre-drilled holes and precisely fitting contact surfaces make assembly quick and easy. Solid screw connections ensure a secure hold.
Important: an even base – such as a rug or a blanket – protects both the floor and the tabletop during assembly. Once assembled, the table stands securely and stably – ready to serve faithfully for many years.
The result: a one-off for generations
What looked like a rough piece of nature at the start has now become an elegant, expressive designer table. No two tables are alike – each has its own shape, colour, grain and story. That is exactly what makes it so valuable.
Thanks to the sturdy metal frame and the oiled surface, the table is not only beautiful but also practical for everyday use. Whether as a coffee table, side table or small dining table – this piece of furniture makes a statement. And it proves that genuine craftsmanship, high-quality materials and timeless design go perfectly together.
Conclusion: solid wood meets metal – the perfect combination
This table impressively shows how a seemingly simple piece of wood and a well-designed metal frame can become a design object. It is the attention to detail, the experience in working with natural materials and the quality of workmanship that make the difference.
If you are planning a project yourself – for your home, your office or your café – and are looking for a sturdy, attractive base, you’ll find the right solution with us. Our metal table legs are made in the EU and can be combined with a wide range of tabletops.
